While we all anxiously impatiently calmly wait for the wedding pictures to be ready, I thought I'd share with you all our amazing trip :) It. was. awesome. And I took about 19874529833 photos (ok, like 300...but I can tell already its gonna be hard to condense the trip into a few posts). I think it'll be easiest to break it down by each city where we stayed. So I'll start my introduction of Chile right where we started....Zapallar!

Actually, we landed after midnight in Santiago, but after a customs woman doubted my identity, we picked up our brand new damaged luggage and I passed out immediately....I think its best to start with the next morning - on our way to Zapallar! Since Javs' cousin had so kindly lent us her car, we decided to take our time driving to our beach town destination and make a few traditional Cabezas stops along the way :)
i'm wearing one too :) |
And I certainly wasn't going to argue when our first stop included empanadas :) YUM :) I wish it had been a little farther down the road, but when we spotted another Cabezas haunt (known for their pastel de choclo) we had to stop....for a second lunch. I'm so glad we did because we never got pastel again and it was so freakin good!
Then we headed to Olmue, where Javs remembered staying at a little farmhouse during some of their visits. We found the house (and Yola, the maid Javs remembered from his kiddo days!) and lots of avocados. (They practically give avocados away in Chile and they are so fresh and delicious) Did I mention we were finding all these spots using only some vintage maps and our guide book. Good thing we had nowhere to be and all day to get there ;)
We eventually arrived at Isla Seca, our quaint hotel in Zapallar. You could see the ocean and the town from our balcony! That night we went to Puntami for an amazing seafood dinner (and hilarious entertainment). Chile was playing Argentina in futbol (soccer for you Mericans) and the wait staff was completely giddy and joyfully distracted by the game.
It was so funny watching these guys run back to the kitchen during a break in action to take care of their tables. We allowed ourselves to sleep in the next morning and then explored the beach and the park. It was cold but we were determined to enjoy some time on the beach :) We also enjoyed the most amazing lunch at one of the three restaurants right in Zapallar. I should tell you that Zapallar is known as a little beach town anyway, but since it was spring (not quite summer yet) we basically had the town to ourselves. It ended up being perfect that our first stop in Chile was so chill and low-key, we needed to do some relaxing. Which is why it was so nice that the hotel sent up champagne our last night and breakfast in bed the next morning!

After our few, sleepy days in Zapallar, it was time to head south to Vina del Mar for some more sight seeing and family visits!

The palta (avocados) were $1/lb roughly. Are you kidding me?!?!?
